RUMFORD — Residents have organized a spaghetti supper and dance from 5 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 17, at the Rumford Eagles hall to benefit a Rumford woman suffering from a rare debilitating disease.

Resident Kim Chiasson said her close friend, Cheryl Wade, was diagnosed with Stiff Person’s Syndrome, a neurological disorder where the person’s body goes into aggressive spasms that could result in broken or fractured bones.

“She’s doing all right,” Chiasson said, “but she still needs a lot of help. It’s an uncomfortable disorder that none of us had heard about before she was diagnosed.”

The supper will include meatballs, fresh-baked garlic bread, cole slaw, beverage and desserts. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger.

The Roadhouse Band will play classic rock music from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission to the dance is $10. Chiasson said a supper and dance combo ticket is $15.

Residents can also purchase a specially made T-shirt for $10 with proceeds benefiting Wade.

Chiasson said she was one of seven people who have helped organize the benefit, though it’s not the first time that they’ve come together to organize a benefit supper and dance.

“We’ve held several benefits over the years for many of our friends who were diagnosed with terminal illnesses,” Chiasson said. “As always, the people and businesses have been fantastic about donating items for our benefits, whether it’s food or items for the live auction. We’ve reached out through Facebook to ask for help, and everyone has been great about helping.”
