MEXICO — A Rumford cab driver was killed early Wednesday morning after the car he was driving flipped over an embankment and caught fire, Mexico police Chief Roy Hodsdon said.

Gary McGuire, 62, an employee of Mountain Valley Taxi Service in Mexico, was traveling west on Route 2 at approximately 1 a.m. when the 2009 Lincoln Continental he was driving veered into the breakdown lane, struck a lawn embankment and flipped onto its roof, Hodsdon said.

The car was registered to the cab company, he said.

“We received a call around 1:26 a.m. about a car accident near The Big Apple gas station on Route 2 in Mexico,” Hodsdon said. “By the time that the Mexico and Rumford police departments arrived at the scene, the car was on fire. The driver was unconscious and still trapped in the vehicle.”

Hodsdon said officers were able to put out the fire and remove McGuire from the vehicle. He was taken to Rumford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later.

Although the accident remains under investigation, Hodsdon said preliminary findings revealed that a pre-existing medical condition may have caused the crash.

An accident reconstruction team with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation, Hodsdon said.
