PARIS — Construction of a Family Dollar store on Main Street has been halted because the building is too close to the road.

On Thursday, Paris Code Enforcement Officer Fred Collins issued a stop work order following a routine inspection of the foundation’s footers.

In January, the Planning Board waived the requirement that the building be 20 feet back from property lines and instead allowed a 20-foot setback from the road.

Collins said it was difficult to measure the precise distance by which the footers did not meet the requirement, but “it’s a little short.”

Tampa, Fla.-based developer Hunt Real Estate is constructing an 8,320-square-foot store and a 24-space parking lot on about 1½ acres where Shaner’s Family Restaurant stood for three decades.

In April, the building was torn down and construction on the new site began shortly after.

The order will stop construction on the building until the Planning Board can review the site plan with representatives from Hunt and reach an agreement.

“They understand the issues and they’re coming back to the board and will present a proposal,” Collins said.

The Planning Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, to discuss the proposal.
