HARTFORD — Selectman John Plumley is being challenged by Cathy Lowe in next month’s annual elections, Town Clerk Lianne Bedard said Wednesday.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Town Hall.
The annual town meeting is for 9 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Town Hall.
Plumley, who has served as selectman for the past six years and is code enforcement officer for Peru and Canton, said his major goal for another three-year term is to try and keep taxes down.
“For the last six years, we haven’t been able to do much of anything to improve the status of the town, mostly because the town doesn’t have revenue to speak of,” Plumley said. “I’d like to see some kind of business come through here. I’m not talking a Walmart, but anything to bring some money to town. It’s not something that would happen right away, but I want to fight for something like that to happen.”
One idea Plumley said he has is to get a retirement home to come to the region.
“Sometimes, when someone who is married passes away, the person who is left doesn’t have enough money to live by themselves,” he said. “We don’t have any sort of retirement home for people. I’m still figuring out whether something like that is feasible or not.”
Lowe, who has served as road commissioner in the past and currently serves on the Roads Committee, said this is her first time running for selectman.
“I’ve thought about it before, but this is the first year I’m doing it,” Lowe said. “I just thought the town could use a little change.”
Lowe said she wants to make sure that “the right jobs are being done” in town, and she wants “to look out for the people’s interests.”
