FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted Tuesday to allow the sheriff to swear in full-time deputies from neighboring Somerset County.

Somerset will do the same for Franklin County deputies.

Franklin County deputies currently do not have the jurisdiction to stop vehicles in a six- or seven-mile stretch of Route 27 in New Portland, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said.

The road runs from New Vineyard in Franklin County, through a section of New Portland in Somerset County and into Kingfield in Franklin County

Having the Franklin and Somerset deputies and sheriffs sworn in in both counties helps with jurisdiction issues, Nichols said.

Commissioners also voted to hire Michael MacKnight of Andover to be a reserve deputy.

The panel also voted 2-1, with Chairman Fred Hardy of New Sharon opposed, to add a section of the former patrol deputies’ contract to the new four-year contract approved in November 2013. The contract was retroactive to July 1, 2012.

Hardy opposed the original contract approval.

The section added covers paid time off and requires that it be scheduled five working days in advance. It also outlines overtime pay in regards to paid time off.

In other business, commissioners set the annual inspection of county roads for June 14. Commissioners will meet at 7 a.m. to begin the tour of roads.
