ROXBURY — Despite days of rain, mud season officially ended for Roxbury all-terrain vehicle trails early Friday morning.
The ATV motoring public can now drive about Roxbury trails.
Michael Worthley, president of the Roxbury ATV Riders Club, said the club opened the extensive and popular trail system at 5 a.m. Friday.
On May 7, Worthley said ATV trails in the River Valley area were all closed until June 1 due to mud season and the club’s inability to get out on trails to repair rain damage. Signs posted along the trails also stated they were closed, but have since been removed, now that the trails are open.
Worthley said club crews repaired 12 culverts which were washed out by heavy rains in April. Two trails that are still closed and may open on June 15, are: Mine Notch Trail and West Branch Ellis River from Lonas Farm Road to Ellis Pond Variety, due to recent trail work.
Now that most trails are open, the Roxbury ATV Riders Club will host its annual Lee Hodgkins Memorial Poker Run from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at the Roxbury ATV Park and Ride on Roxbury Notch Road. Registration opens at 8 a.m.
