BIDDEFORD (AP) — The University of New England has closed a rehabilitation center for injured or stranded marine animals because seal colonies that were threatened have rebounded.

The Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Conservation program has been running since 2001, rehabilitating more than 1,000 seals and releasing them back into the wild.

Officials say the gray and harbor seal populations that were endangered have rebounded.

The program’s closing was announced on its website as the school announced new undergraduate marine sciences programs.
