LEWISTON — Skateboarders will have to find a different place to ride for the first part of June while crews seal some cracks and make other repairs in the Kennedy Park Skate Park.

“We’ve never done any work on that skateboard park other than just general maintenance,” said Megan Bates, Lewiston’s deputy director highway and open space.

Bates said the park will close Monday for seven to 10 days.

“There are a lot of cracks and areas of concrete that have started breaking up,” she said, “so they’ll be filling that up and also sealing it. It’s what any skateboard park needs, especially in Maine and our weather with the freezing and thawing. It’s just like a road. It’s going to buckle and crack, and rain gets in there, and eventually you have to do something to keep it safe.”

The skate park was built in 2006 for the Skate Lewiston and Auburn Movement, a collection of local skateboarders and their parents who raised the money to build the park.

It consists of two deep bowls and a street course, with ramps, benches, curbs and other obstacles.

“We’ll close it for up to 10 days, depending on the weather,” Bates said. “It’s very detailed work. If you’ve ever walked that park, it’s amazing the number of cracks that really do need to be filled.”
