The city water department advises area residents to run their water until it’s clear.
City crews began working to repair the water main break just after 8 a.m. Friday morning. They finished the repair a little after 4 p.m. and continued to flush mains and clean up the area into the late afternoon.
The break occurred near the Sabattus Street-Perley Street intersection, shutting traffic on the road to one lane, according to a Lewiston city text alert.
According to the city, water service to homes between Furbush and Perley streets was turned off while crews worked on the repairs. It was later expanded to include homes along Jean, Ames, Lynn and Laurier streets.
Service was expected to be off for homes on those streets into Friday evening.
City officials said the break may cause household water to be discolored for customers living between East Avenue and the town lines. They said the water should be safe to drink, cook or wash with, and they urged residents to run their taps until the water is clear.
