INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Bates women’s rowing team still couldn’t beat Williams at a national final, but it was mutual rival Trinity that stole the show Saturday, winning the first varsity eights grand final and the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship.

Bates, ranked No. 1 in Divsion III for the first time entering the national regatta, held a slight lead over a surging Williams halfway through the race.

But both the eight-time defending champion Ephs and Trinity overwhelmed the Bates crew over the second half.

Trinity outraced Williams to the finish line, 7:06.333 to 7:08.053.

Bates’ second varsity eights, undefeated all season, won its grand final in dominating fashion, outpacing runner-up Trinity by 10:449 seconds, 7:18.967 to 7:29.416.

In the final national standings, Trinity finished with 40 points, followed by Williams with 33 and Bates with 31, ending the Bobcats’ five-year streak of national runner-up status.
