I write in response to the Sun Journal story concerning sex abuse by clergy (May 27).

We should examine our own consciences before we throw stones at clergy for sex abuse. As humans, we are all sinners in need of the Lord’s mercy.

People wonder why bishops do not report a priest’s sex abuse. If a priest or lay Catholic has confessed that, or other sins, to a priest or bishop in confession (a sacrament instituted by Christ for salvation of souls), he is bound by seal of confession not to reveal anything confessed, even to the point of giving up his life.

In confession, a priest, bishop or pope acts in the name of God and it is through his ministers that the Lord forgives the sins of the penitent. They are the doctors of the soul (our spiritual life).

If clergymen were to break the seal of confession, they are excommunicated. They would be like another Judas — betrayers as minister of God — and feel forever cursed by God.

To cure sex abuse, the U.S. should clean up all sex material; in print, movies, on television, texting, etc.

Our lady said that if we do not give up sinful behaviors, we will perish and be away from God, forever.
