STONINGTON (AP) — The Maine Department of Marine Resources is starting the process of suspending the license of a lobsterman it cited in May for one of the largest illegal lobster harvests in recent history.

The marine patrol said Theodore Gray, who operates out of Stonington, possessed 269 undersized lobsters and 123 known breeding lobsters. He faces jail time and a maximum fine of more than $100,000 if convicted. Authorities described the case as the most egregious of its kind in more than a quarter century.

Authorities also charged Gray with molesting lobster equipment. A marine resource department spokesman said Monday the department is reviewing evidence from the investigation and does not need to wait for a conviction before it makes a ruling.

Gray has not returned messages left at his home.
