FREEPORT — Emergency personnel are at the scene of a workplace fatality at 136-140 Main Street.

Few details were being released, but a man was killed in an accident while working on the building that houses three businesses — Olympia Sports, Subway and Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro, according to Freeport Police Chief Gerald Schofield.

Firefighters and police responded just before 9 a.m. to a report of an industrial accident involving an employee of Coastal Lawncare Inc., Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said from the scene late Tuesday morning.

Fournier said that three employees of the company had been using a compact loader to replace granite steps at the site when the accident occurred. When first responders arrived the man was already deceased, the fire chief said.

Officials with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the state medical examiner’s office were at the scene investigating by late morning.

The area was cordoned off and the three businesses remained closed as the investigation continued.
