PERU — Selectmen on Monday evening accepted a $4,000 bid from Maine Drilling and Blasting in Gardiner to remove ledge that interferes with plowing Gammon Road. The blasting will also allow town workers to improve drainage there.

Brenda Swan, director of the Peru Food Bank, received permission from selectmen to use land behind the playground near the Town Office for a community garden. The food bank leaders want to get more healthful food into the hands of those who need it.

Swan is looking for people to form a steering committee for the project. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will provide guidance. Those interested in helping should contact the Town Office.

The Maine Department of Transportation will install a traffic-activated warning light on Route 108. Drivers coming from Rumford have difficulty seeing traffic entering the highway from Main Street. The flashing light at the intersection will remain.

Selectmen on Monday formally took possession of a blue tick hound dog and two cats picked up in town but never claimed. The town has held them in a commercial kennel and paid for their care. Now it is looking for people to adopt them.

All medical tests, shots and tick and flea treatments are up to date. More information is available from the Town Office.
