LIVERMORE FALLS — A local man who was critically injured when he was hit by a car while crossing Depot Street on June 1, died Wednesday, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said.
Richard McCrillis, 82, of Livermore Falls was at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and was moved to The Hospice House of Androscoggin County in Auburn on Tuesday, his niece Linda Deane of Livermore said.
He died from injuries he received in the accident early Wednesday, she said. He had life-altering injuries, including a broken neck, she said.
Steward previously said the vehicle driven by Ava Crocker, 57, of Jay struck McCrillis while he was in a downtown crosswalk near Breakneck RC Speedway.
Crocker told police she didn’t see McCrillis until it was too late and she was unable to avoid hitting him, Steward said June 2.
The accident remains under investigation.
Deane said her uncle was a simple man who lived a simple life. He lived most of his life in East Jay and moved to the Livermore Terrace in Livermore Falls about 20 years ago, she said.
He kept his apartment immaculate, she said. He was a little old man who had a routine he did every day, she said.
He walked every day. He went to Cumberland Farms every day and learned what was going on in town. He went to Food City to get his groceries and sometimes stopped at Family Dollar.
People around town would know him because he always had his pants rolled up. Years ago he had a bicycle he seemed to push more than ride, she said.
He was in good health and was not on any medication, she said.
He was also very careful when he was out walking and always used a crosswalk to cross the road, she said.
In his younger years he worked in the woods as a logger and worked at Macky Turner’s farm in East Jay.
