SELINSGROVE, Pa.— Jacob Lapierre of Lewiston was one of six students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time in Fort Albany and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, as part of the university’s Global Opportunities program.

GO North: An Introduction to Cree Culture and Contemporary Issues in Northern Ontario gave students the opportunity to explore the Mushkegowuk Cree culture of Northern Ontario through service learning in Fort Albany. Students spent much of their time volunteering with and for community programs; these included placements in the school, social service programs and the hospital. The return trip offered the chance of exploring “mainstream” Canadian culture and government with a visit to Ottawa.

Lapierre is studying psychology at Susquehanna, where he will be a senior in the fall. He is a 2011 graduate of Lewiston High School and the son of Gerry and Brenda Lapierre.
