HERMON — A fight between a mother and daughter Monday night caused the mother to become distracted while driving and she crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into the car of a Carmel woman, killing her on impact, Deputy Chief Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Karen Worcester 60, of Carmel died at the scene of the two-vehicle crash that occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on Route 2 just before the Carmel town line, the deputy chief said.

Rebecca Chasse, 52, of Carmel was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty with her daughter, Rachelle Welch, 29, of Carmel as her passenger.

“Mrs. Chasse became distracted while having an argument with her daughter,” Morton said. “[Chasse], who was traveling toward Hermon, crossed the center line and struck Karen Worcester’s vehicle.”

Chasse and Welch were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor with serious injuries, Morton said Monday night.

Whether Chasse will face any charges will be up to the Penobscot County district attorney’s office, Morton said.

“The investigation is ongoing. Once completed it will be reviewed with the district attorney’s,” the deputy chief said.

Route 2 was temporarily closed to traffic for the investigation led by Sgt. Jamie Kennedy and Detective Andrew Whitehouse. Maine State Police, firefighters and rescue crew members from Hermon, Carmel and Levant also assisted at the fatal crash scene.
