OXFORD — Legendary country singer Charley Pride will headline this year’s Oxford Fair in September.
“We got Charley Pride,” Jackie Young, president of the Oxford Fair, announced Monday.
Pride will perform Saturday, Sept. 13, at the fairgrounds off Pottle Road. Tickets are $10, Young said.
Over the past 30 years, Pride has remained one of the top 20 best-selling country artists of all-time, according to his website. His legacy includes 36 No. 1 hit singles, over 70 million albums sold, 31 gold and four platinum albums, including one quadruple platinum. On RCA Records, Charley Pride is second in sales only to Elvis Presley, his website says.
His first N0. 1 hit was in 1969 when he recorded “All I Have to Offer You (Is Me.)”
Dozens of Pride’s chart toppers now stand as modern classics. “Kiss An Angel Good Morning” went on to be a million-selling crossover single and helped Pride land Country Music Association Awards as Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and Top Male Vocalist in 1971 and 1972.
Young said Jimmy Lehoux, winner of the Oxford Fair’s 2010 Country Up Band Challenge, will open for Pride. Lehoux, a Nashville recording star, has opened up for country music and rock legends like Alabama, Charlie Daniels, Pam Tillis, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker and Molly Hatchet.
The Oxford Fair runs Sept. 10 to 13. Drawing from last year’s successful fair with a focus on family and agriculture, affordable pricing, entertainment and educational displays, Young said once again there will be something for everyone.
“The main thing is we decided we wanted to keep the fair family orientated and affordable,” she said.
New attractions this year include a petting zoo, agricultural demonstrations museum, garden tractor pulls and many other events and displays.
