TURNER — Bear Pond Improvement Association’s first meeting for the 2014 season is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Boofy Quimby Memorial Center in North Turner. The main agenda item for this meeting is sharing specifics and details about BPIA’s upcoming Bear Pond Community Fun Day.
The BPIA Community Fun Day is scheduled for July 26. This day is planned for all members of the Bear Pond Community. Specific details will be provided about all the activities planned, times for events and its location at the meeting on June 29.
BPIA invites and encourages all Big Bear and Little Bear cottage owners to attend the meeting, whether a member of BPIA or not.
BPIA is extremely excited to collaborate with the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute to provide the Melinda Ann, a floating classroom, at the BPIA Community Fun Day. This floating classroom uses scientific equipment to investigate what lies beneath the surface of Bear Pond and will engage children in activities to raise their awareness of how lakes work.
The Melinda Ann will be available for schoolchildren ages 8 and up. Space is limited to 11 children per 1.5-hour trip with four trips scheduled during the day. Initial sign-ups to reserve spots will be taken at the June 29 meeting. BPIA encourages families to reserve their spots early as this is expected to fill quickly. The cost of the Melinda Ann is being covered by the BPIA.
Other events planned for the BPIA Community Fun Day include a youth fishing derby, a poker run, games and activities, and educational displays about BPIA’s conservation activities. Lunch will also be provided to all attendees.
BPIA is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization of nearly 150 member families whose purpose is to oversee the well-being of Big Bear and Little Bear Ponds, and the surrounding watershed in Turner and Hartford.
The association takes great pride in its water quality testing efforts, placement of buoys to mark hazards, dam maintenance and water level monitoring and the Protection Fund designed to be a proactive approach in addressing erosion issues around the ponds.
Annual BPIA dues are $25 and membership is strictly voluntary. Membership dues support BPIA’s activities and efforts to maintain the pristine nature of Bear Pond for our recreation and enjoyment and for that of generations to come.
