FARMINGTON — The Board of Selectmen would like to find a new home for the community banner poles located at the corner of Farmington Falls Road and High Street.

The two poles, which hold up to three banners, are used by local groups to announce events to drivers entering Farmington on Route 2.

While planning to landscape the former town garage lot, the idea of moving the posts was brought up.

There are two other locations used for community announcements. A similar one is located at Philbrick Park in Farmington Falls. A smaller, enclosed sign is available on the traffic island near the bridge in West Farmington, Town Manager Richard Davis told the board.

Davis attempted to find a location for the poles which was a safe place for people to stop and put up banners, as well as a place easily seen by motorists.

He had asked Leon Heckbert, owner of Pro Service, to use space on his Farmington Falls Road lot. Heckbert has changed his mind about having the poles on his property, Davis said.

On Tuesday, the board considered eliminating the banner poles at the new park location.

They get a lot of use, Davis said.

“I’m not comfortable getting rid of one of the three signs without looking harder for an alternate location,” Selectman Andrew Buckland said.

The board agreed. They decided to seek another site while placing a moratorium on scheduling of any future banners for the Farmington Falls Road poles. Reservations already made for space will be honored and can be posted.

Selectman Michael Fogg suggested the board consider the electrical substation property near Good Times Unlimited.

Few ideas for alternate spaces were suggested. 

The board decided to ask townspeople for help in finding a suitable location — a space that can provide safety for those putting up signs, yet offer easy access and visibility.
