JAY — Street Light Committee members planned to review about 10 streetlights targeted for removal and that residents are concerned about, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said Friday.

About 30 people attended a meeting Thursday to discuss concerns about specific lights.

The seven-member committee reviewed forms residents had filed for about 10 more lights and decided that those lights should be removed, she said.

The committee recommended the removal of about 135 lights but the number fluctuates as more information becomes known. Central Maine Power is reviewing a light inventory.

The committee will meet at 6 p.m. July 9 at the Town Office. The committee’s final decision will be presented to selectpersons at a 6 p.m. July 14 meeting at the Town Office.

The budget for streetlights this year is $64,150, which covers 400 or so lights and 17 special facilities, LaFreniere said. Voters on June 10 approved a budget for $48,000 that represented eliminating about 25 percent of the lights in town. However, more could be removed.

The streetlights to get a second review are on Intervale Road (Route 140), Therrien Road, Franklin Road (Route 133), Main Street (Route 4), Forest Circle and Chickadee Avenue.

The lights will be looked at by the committee and members will give a recommendation on whether they will stay on, be removed or switched out for another light, LaFreniere said.

The committee is also looking at having 10 lights relocated.

New lime green posters will be taped on those poles with teal Duct tape to show there has been a change of status Tuesday. Some new lights may be tagged instead of lights that were previously targeted once the committee reviews them again, she said.

The original posters indicating removal were pink.

Some of the lights selected to be removed were easy decisions but many were hard decisions to make, she said.

People can choose to pay an average of about $150 per year to CMP to keep a streetlight on.
