POLAND — Ty Martin had five hits Saturday, leading Bessey Motors to a doubleheader sweep of Tri-Town, 6-1 and 5-0, in a battle of the only two remaining undefeated teams in Zone 3 American Legion baseball.
Riley Chickering pitched a complete game in the opener and homered in the nightcap in support of Ryan Godin and Mike Mageles, who combined for a two-hit shutout and 11 strikeouts.
Bessey, featuring players from Oxford Hills, Lake Region and Fryeburg, is now 6-0. Tri-Town of Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot is 5-2.
Martin went 3-for-4 in the opening game and 2-for-4 in the second contest. Chickering’s home run was his third hit of the finale.
Bessey broke open each game with four runs in the second inning.
Trailing 1-0 in the morning session, Bessey got consecutive hits from Martin, Brady LaFrance and Aiden Heikkinen to start the rally. Mageles was later hit by a Zak Johnson pitch before Nick Attaliades-Ryan cleared the bases with a two-out double.
Chickering struck out four, walked five and allowed only two hits. Bessey added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames.
In the second game, Chickering’s RBI single and LaFrance’s sacrifice fly highlighted the big inning.
Tri-Town’s hits in the second game were a bunt single by Danny Bernier and an infield safety by Matt Rabasco. Godin struck out seven in five innings. Mageles fanned four in the sixth and seventh.
Lukas Johnson took the loss in Game 2.
