RUMFORD — Rumford police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office are alerting western Maine residents about fraudulent phone calls claiming to be from Microsoft.
Microsoft is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Redmond, Wash., that develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics and personal computers and services.
“The caller is of foreign decent and alerts citizens that their computer has been diagnosed with a virus, and for $80 and a credit card number it will be cleared up with no worries,” Rumford police Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said June 25 via email.
“We are seeing more and more of this lately, and (the Sheriff’s Office) took a complaint in Byron (on June 25),” he said.
Rumford police Sgt. Tracey Higley said Tuesday that another caller used the same fraudulent call to try and get personal information from a resident.
