AUGUSTA — Democratic candidate Shenna Bellows is going to debate Republican Sen. Susan Collins 10 times in the race for the U.S. Senate seat.

The former head of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine said in a letter to Collins on Thursday that voters would benefit from 10 debates — the same number Collins and Rep. Tom Allen did in the 2008 campaign.

Bellows says that “voter confidence in Congress is at a near-record low” and that Mainers need to hear directly from the candidates, “unfiltered by spin.”

Collins spokesman Lance Dutson responded that her team looks forward to the campaign, including debates, to begin “in earnest this fall.”

In a letter to Bellows, he said that debates must be planned around Collins’ Senate schedule should be held throughout the state.
