PARIS — Richard W. “Frenchie” Legassie was named Veteran of the Month for June at the Maine Veterans Home on High Street.

Legassie grew up in Sheridan and when he was 16 he went to work for Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Bridgton.

On March 26, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in France and Germany during World War II. He was a private first class doing infantry work and earned a Purple Heart and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 17, 1945.

Legassie was married prior to entering the military. He has two children, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

After the service, he worked at the Barron Center in Portland. Over the years he leased many filling stations. He drove delivery trucks and delivered soda and beer to many stores. He also worked in resale and part time as a gas station attendant before he retired.

He has a passion for horse racing. He came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in August 2013 and enjoys socializing.
