MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help paint the Willis Homestead Museum where meetings are held.
The painting project will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12.
President Bob Daigle said Tuesday morning that he and the rest of the society decided the best thing to do to fix it up would be to repaint it.
“The last time we put a full layer of paint on the building was 15 years ago,” Daigle said. “The paint is chipping, and we figured painting it again would spruce it up a bit.”
The society is looking for volunteers because the society doesn’t have enough members who are physically able to participate, he said.
“Our group is small, and so many of us are elderly, that it makes it difficult to find enough people to paint the building,” Daigle said. “Right now, we have five younger people who have volunteered to help us paint. Two mill workers said they would help out. We could use help from anybody at all. They don’t have to be members of the Historical Society to help.”
Daigle said the society has a dozen paintbrushes and that anybody who owns a ladder is welcome to bring one.
Society member Lorraine Legere said in a recent news release that volunteers are encouraged to bring extra wire brushes and paint brushes.
Daigle suggested volunteers call the Mexico Historical Society between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday to ensure that the start time for the painting remains the same.
“The event is weather dependent, so if we get bad weather in the morning, we may start later,” Daigle said. “We’re also not expecting to finish the entire building in one day. There’s a chance we’ll have to continue painting at a later date, depending on how many volunteers we get.”
For more information, call the Mexico Historical Society between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at 364-6288.
