JAY — Selectpersons will get an update on the townwide property revaluation done by John E. O’Donnell & Associates of Gray at 6 p.m. Monday, July 14, at the Town Office.
The board agreed to pay $50,000 to the firm in April to update all properties in town except Verso Paper Mill, which is undergoing a complete revaluation by industrial specialists. Corporate Valuations Inc. of Oregon is conducting the revaluation of the mill, which has not been completed. That is expected to cost about $247,175.
“Overall, property owners are expected to see a decrease in their valuation but it does not necessarily equate to a reduction in property tax,” Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said Friday.
Property owners will be sent letters that will identify their current valuation and their proposed valuation within the next two weeks, she said. The letters will tell them how they can make an appointment to meet with a representative of the assessing firm to go over the new valuations.
Selectpersons on Monday will also consider approving a final list of street lights recommended to be removed.
A seven-member Street Light Committee has narrowed the list to 133 lights, with possibly others they are still working on with Central Maine Power Co.
Some street lights initially proposed to be removed were added back after residents raised concerns, while a couple others have been added that were not on an initial list.
Lights that were targeted for removal but will remain are at: a crosswalk on Main Street at the bottom of Community Drive; bus stops on Intervale and Therrien roads; a back corner of Forest Circle; and Main Street near Keiran Chiropractic and the new Subway shop building.
Two that were not on the original list to be removed but were added are on Buckland Drive and Ouellette Street.
Voters approved a budget of $48,000 this year for street lights that meant approximately 25 percent of the lights needed to be cut. Last year the town paid $64,150 for street lights.
