SUMNER — Preparations are underway for the beginning of the 2014 Summer Church Season at the West Sumner Universalist Society on Main Street, Route 219, about a half-mile from Pleasant Pond, at the very top of the hill.

Founded over 100 years ago, the church has a long, proud history as both a religious institution and also a meeting and gathering place for reunions, birthday and anniversary celebrations.

The first 2014 service will be conducted by Marilyn Hammond on July 13 at 11 a.m., followed by a coffee hour. Special services will include a christening service on Aug. 10 and a communion service on Aug. 17.

The third annual “Whatever Sale” for the benefit of the church will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. This event is a combination yard sale, bake sale, craft sale, etc., and a hearty lunch will be available. Anyone wishing to cook their favorite recipe would be welcomed. Craft tables will be available for $10; anyone interested in obtaining a table should contact Pauline Kirschner at 388-2020.

The Church Restoration Committee is a fundraising arm of the church, which is still accepting donations to assist in maintaining the church. The long overdue painting of the interior was completed last summer. Stop by and see for yourself the amazing transformation.

The church has a prominent place in the history of the community; it needs support to enable its existence for generations to come. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.

All services begin at 11 and are followed by coffee hour. Beth Chaffee will be the organist. This season’s scheduled speakers are: July 13, Marilyn Hammond; July 20, Bernice Martin; July 27, Rev. Anita White; Aug. 3, Silver Moore Leaman; Aug. 10, Rev. Scott Jones, Christening; Aug. 17, Rev. Richard Beal, Communion; Aug. 24, Rodney Abbott; Aug. 31, Rev. Fayre Stephenson.
