HARTFORD — Bear Pond Community Fun Day, sponsored by the Bear Pond Improvement Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26.
The event will be held in the boat launch area at 65 Berry Road. BPIA invites and encourages all Big Bear and Little Bear cottage owners, their families and guests to come for a day of fun and education, whether a member of BPIA or not.
The Melinda Ann, a floating classroom which will investigate what lies beneath the surface of the pond, is scheduled to make four 1.5-hour trips on the pond with school-age children ages 8 years and up. To reserve a spot for your family member/guest at no cost, contact Darlene Burdin at 207-224-8066. Space is limited to 11 children on each trip so advance reservations will be important.
Informational discussions and materials highlighting BPIA’s work in the areas of water quality and testing, buoys marking hazards, dam maintenance and water level monitoring, and the Protection Fund designed to address erosion issues around the ponds will be on display.
Games and activities are planned throughout the day.
Lunch will be provided free to all attendees from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. An ice cream truck will be on site for individual purchases.
Two other special fun events are planned to coincide with the Bear Pond Community Fun Day.
A two-day fishing derby for youths age 15 and younger will be held all day Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26, until 10 a.m. on Big and Little Bear Pond. Bring your catch to the camp of Kent Mitchell, 41 Jones Road, Little Bear (207-778-1445) for measurement and a photo. Trophies will be awarded at Fun Day. Catch and release is encouraged, if possible.
A poker run is scheduled for Friday evening, July 25, with the final card available for purchase at the Fun Day. Contact Pete Angell at 207-225-3737 for information on the poker run.
All activities, other than the poker run and the ice cream truck, are being sponsored by BPIA at no cost to attendees. Attendees should plan to bring their own chairs. Cottage owners are encouraged to arrive by boat, if possible. There will be no alcohol, swimming or dogs at the Bear Pond Community Fun Day.
