Eastern Maine Medical Center upgraded the conditions Friday of a 76-year-old Mexico couple, Joseph and Marjorie Richard, who were hurt in a head-on collision Tuesday in Brewer that killed a couple from Rumford and injured two people from Massachusetts.

The Bangor hospital listed Joseph Richard’s condition as “good” and Marjorie Richard’s condition to “fair.”

Marjorie’s sister, Judy Errington of Peru, said the Richards are both awake, alert and improving after surgeries Thursday.

Joseph Richard, who was driving the car, suffered a severely broken ankle from the crash, Errington said.

Marjorie Richard broke both thigh bones, one knee and one elbow, Errington said.

“They’ve got a long road ahead of the them but their surgeries went fine,” she said.

The crash killed Joseph Wilfred LaPlante, 85, and Ella LaPlante, 86, both of Rumford.

The other car’s occupants, Robert and Judy Collins of Barnstable, Mass., were also hurt.

A hospital spokesman said Judy Collins’ condition was “fair” but there was no information on Robert Collins’ condition.
