FARMINGTON — Western Maine Street Rods will hold its second annual Motor Madness on July 25 and 26 at Farmington Fairgrounds.

The event is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, and from 8 a.m. until closing Saturday, July 26, member Michael Pond said.

Friday events include a swap meet, flea market, vendors and a truck pull, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday activities will include a car and motorcycle show, a display of vehicles from area car dealers and music, as well as vendors offering antiques, vehicles and food.

Monster trucks from the North Woods will be shown. An antique tractor pull starts at 11:30 a.m., Pond said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department will conduct fingerprinting and a canine demonstration, Pond said.

There will also be a bounce house and other activities for children.

The day is topped off with a Demolition Derby starting at 4:30 p.m. The winner will receive $1,000.

Some of the proceeds from the weekend will go to The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing and Arbor House, both in Lewiston. Mary Dempsey, Patrick’s sister, is expected to be there, Pond said.

Last year, 1,640 people attended and $22,000 was raised. After deducting the $12,000 cost of the weekend, half of the remaining amount was given the Dempsey Center.

“You can spend $10 and stay all day and it’s for a good cause,” Pond said. “Everyone has been affected by cancer.”

It takes a lot of organization to put the event on but last year was also educational, he said.

“We learned what to do and are trying to make it better,” he said.

A shuttle service will be available to take people from the grandstands to other areas of the fairgrounds.

Western Maine Street Rods was founded in Andover and centered mostly in the Rumford area, but now there are members from Phillips, Strong, Farmington and Chesterville.

“It’s a good bunch of people,” Pond said.

After the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce stopped its annual car show, the group thought about what it could do beyond just a car show, he said. That started the Motor Madness.

Admission is $10 a day. A two-day pass is $15. Children under 12 can enter for free.
