BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Community Band will celebrate its 20th anniversary with two Telstar Regional High School graduates as guest conductors.
The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the West Parish Congregational Church.
Jane Chandler, a longtime member of the band, said Bethel residents Simon Smith and Samantha Powell will each conduct during two songs. They have played with the band for 10 years and graduated from Telstar in 2011.
Smith and Powell are seeking music education degrees at the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine, respectively.
The band started in 1994 as the Mahoosuc Music Makers after residents Ellen Whitney and Rhonda Buker noticed the lack of a local band for Memorial Day activities.
“Telstar Regional High School had dropped the music program due to budget cuts, and Whitney, Buker and several others felt the lack of music in the region,” Chandler said. They formed the group with the hopes of performing at the MollyOckett Days parade, and have been doing so ever since.
Chandler said that the group is accepting donations at the door, and refreshments will be served following the concert. “A pictorial history of the band will also be on display,” she said.
