FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners awarded contracts Tuesday for three police cruisers, paving the Communications Center lot and reconstructing and paving Gilkey Hill.

A bid of $62,547 submitted by Quirk Ford of Augusta was unanimously approved by commissioners for three new vehicles for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. The amount reflects a trade-in on two vehicles for $15,000.

The department is seeking to purchase a canine car, a patrol car and a vehicle for the Criminal Investigation Division, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. told the board. The first two will be the same but the CID vehicle will be an off-color to blend in with regular traffic.

The other two bids received were from Farmington Ford for $69,754 after a $15,000 trade-in and Bailey Brothers of Livermore Falls for $72,499 after trade-in.

A total of $90,000 was set aside in the department budget for the vehicles, Nichols said. The amount above the bid will be used to outfit the three cruisers.

Four quotes were received for paving a parking area and creation of a new sidewalk for the Franklin County Regional Communications Center at 124 County Way.

Commissioners unanimously accepted the lowest bid of $3,575 from Western Maine Paving of Norridgewock.

Other bidders included Fine Line Paving’s for $6,265, Pavement Plus for $5,749 and Bruce A. Manzer Inc. for $6,695.

A bid of $381,715 was also unanimously approved for reconstructing and paving Gilkey Hill in Freeman Township.

The bid from Bruce A. Manzer was one of two received.  The other was from E.L. Vining & Son Inc. for $407,787.

Funds will be used from the paving reserve account, which had $819,000 as of the end of July, county Treasurer Mary Frank said.

In other business, Sheriff Nichols added a name to a list of Somerset County officers who will be sworn in as Franklin County officers Aug. 21.

It will be a cross swear-in, Nichols said of the Franklin officers, who will also become Somerset officers.

“We work back and forth together so much,” he said.

The sheriff said he has also received a resignation from the Phillips/Avon Animal Control Officer Josh Bachelder, effective Sept. 1. Nichols will seek a replacement who is trained and certified for the position.
