LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society celebrated Moxie Days with an open house at the Society’s rooms in the MTM Center. The many visitors sampled curator Dot Smith’s Moxie cupcakes with an accompanying jigger of Moxie while touring the museum and materials on display.

Of special interest were two recent additions — a vintage wicker baby carriage from the Ricker family, in which proudly sat Dot and Al Smith’s new great-grandson, Brody Roy with his Moxie bear.

At the same time, an open house at the Ridge School gave some of the younger visitors a chance to experience fun and games from the old days when the school was active.

During the festivities, Society volunteer Earl Williams met and got his picture taken with the updated version of the “Moxie Boy” from oldtime advertising for the famous beverage.

The next meeting of the Society on Wednesday, Aug. 13, will feature a talk by Arlene Tamoosh titled “Growing up in Durham.”

Tamoosh spent much time at her grandfather’s farm in Durham at the turn of the last century and can recall what it was like there in days past. After the Durham bridge was washed out in the great flood of 1936, she remembers crossing the Androscoggin River by ferry with her grandfather Hix to deliver fresh vegetables and butter from their Durham farm to residents of Lisbon Falls, for example.

Her talk follows a brief business meeting at 7 p.m. in the Society rooms in the MTM Center on School Street. Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building. All are welcome to the free program, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Further information is at Lisbonhistsoc@gmail.com or from Dorothy Smith, 353-8510.
