FARMINGTON — A New Jersey woman was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle she was driving collided with a box truck at the intersection of Route 156 and Whittier Road, police Chief Jack Peck said late Wednesday night in a news release.
Carol Wood, 71, of Warren, N.J., was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon east on Whittier Road when it collided with a 2007 International box truck, driven by Ben Hartford, 20, of Jay, which was going west on Lucy Knowles Road (Route 156), he said.
Witnesses told police that Wood did not stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Route 156, and drove into the path of the truck at approximately 5:10 p.m., he said. It was raining at the time of the crash.
Wood, who had life-threatening injuries, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Peck said.
She was listed in critical condition Thursday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Farmington police were assisted at the scene by a Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement unit and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
Further investigation revealed that Wood was vacationing with other family members on Flying Pond in Vienna.
Farmington officer Derek MacDonald is the primary investigator and was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Edward Hastings IV and officer Ryan Wagner.
Both vehicles were impounded, Peck said.
Maine State Police are reconstructing the crash.
