JAY – Selectpersons are having the remaining 2.17 acres of town property at the corner of Route 133 and Hyde Road surveyed, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
The town bought a vacant home, barn and about 2.5 acres at auction for $36,970 on April 30, 2013, with the idea to improve the line-of-sight from the Hyde Road onto Route 133. The intersection had been deemed a dangerous road by the Maine Department of Transportation after 14 accidents in five years, most resulting in injury.
The town and MDOT partnered on the $480,000 project. Jay voters raised $200,000 in the 2012-13 for that purpose. A part of the town’s share included in-kind work by the Highway Department. The work on the intersection was completed in late spring, early summer.
After the state’s taking of land, it leaves the town with 2.17 acres and a large barn.
“We’re looking at taking a piece of it that abuts the DOT’s portion to restrict access to Route 133 from the property,” LaFreniere said. “What we’re looking at is putting an entrance on Hyde Road to the property at the farthest point from the intersection.”
The survey work is being done Kachnovich Land Surveying of Jay.
It is expected after the town keeps a piece of the land, the remainder and the barn will go out to bid, she said.
The board will make a decision at the 6 p.m. meeting Aug. 25 at the Town Office.
