BANGOR (AP) — The former deputy postmaster at the East Vassalboro Post Office has pleaded guilty to stealing mail and embezzling postal money orders.
The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1thLYaY ) reported that Jason Stockmar, of Augusta, was freed on bail Monday after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in Bangor. He will be sentenced at a later date.
Federal prosecutors said in February 2013 the 28-year-old Stockmar took 20 blank postal service money orders from a safe in the East Vassalboro office, imprinted the money orders for almost $20,000 and ordered gold bars from a company. Stockmar ordered the bars in the name of a postal clerk in the North Vassalboro Post Office without her knowledge.
Authorities said he also stole cash, checks and gift cards from mail in amounts from $50 to $600.
