RUMFORD – Former Maine poet laureate Betsy Sholl will read from her work on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Rumford Public Library.
She and others will participate in the monthly poetry reading program from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Linda Macgregor, a member of the library trustees and the Friends of the Rumford Library, said she looked up Sholl online and sent her an email to invite her to the program.
“She’s just a gracious person,” Macgregor said. “Even through email, you can tell that she’s a nice, warm person.”
Sholl was poet laureate of Maine from 2006 to 2011.
Macgregor said Sholl is “an extremely accomplished writer” who has published several collections of poetry.
The idea for the program was born out of a discussion among members of Friends of the Rumford Library, Macgregor said.
“We usually get between eight and 15 people at our meetings, on average,” she said. “We’re a small group, but there’s a lot of talented people that show up. We have a couple of people who are madly in love and write love poetry, and others that show up and share poems by writers that they fancy.”
There is no theme for the meetings and people can share their works or those of others, she said.
Refreshments will be served.
