Lewiston firemen were given $25 a year some time ago and on the condition that each man buy a dress uniform. Only a few have complied with the order, but Mayor Wiseman announced to Chief Moriarty, at the meeting of the Fire Commissioners recently, that if the men did not rig out as ordered their pay would be held up. The board granted Chief Moriarty permission to take the department out Labor Day, in the labor parade.

A large number of antique cars are due to be on exhibit during the Lewiston Summer Festival activities. The cars will be exhibited curbside at Kennedy Park and any owner of an antique car is welcome to participate. Judging in several categories will take place during the afternoon and at 5 p.m. the cars will move out to participate in the Festival Parade. One of the rare cars which may be seen is a 1915 Buick truck, owned by Hartwell Pratt of Minot. Purchased by Pratt’s father, when new, it was used to deliver Keystone Spring Water, and later as a farm truck. Buick discontinued building trucks years ago, therefore there are many who never have heard of such a truck.

The effects of amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act passed by Congress in 1986 are trickling down to the local level as Lewiston and Auburn have just signed an agreement to share the cost of a $170,600 study of the communities’ drinking-water supply. The one portion of the regulations most affecting Lewiston and Auburn refers to surface water supplies — lakes and rivers — that must either add a costly filtration system or demonstrate that the water already meets certain criteria. “We’re optimistic we can demonstrate that the water in Lake Auburn meets those standards, which will allow us to get an exemption,” Norm Lamie, Auburn Water District superintendent, said. According to the agreement, Auburn will pay $61,100, while Lewiston’s share will be $109,500. Despite the difference in payments, the cities have agreed to share equally in whatever phase of the study deals with both Lewiston and Auburn.
