Interference by mob of nearly 1,000 people at Lake Grove, Sunday evening, made possible the escape of a young man from Officer John Mullaney, but in spite of it, another Lewiston boy, was held. Page was put on probation, after pleading guilty to the charge of creating a disturbance.

Mullaney, special officer at the grove and at that time on duty at the moving picture show there, ran to where a crowd had gathered. He found men dragging two young men apart. He collared the two and started out of the grove. The crowd followed in a threatening manner but nothing serious happened until the officer and his men were outside the gate. Then the crowd closed in and began to jostle. Mullaney was then struck twice in the mouth and when he reached for his revolver he lost his hold on the two boys. A shot from Mullaney’s revolver, and the crowd backed up. Joseph Gregory took one boy and went into the Lake Grove house. The crowd threatened to rush into the hotel but the officer managed to prevent any further action.

Chairman Raymond Geiger termed the festival “a very well worthwhile thing,” but at the same time, expressed sorrow at the lack of support given many of the events by local residents. The festival chairman said that not only was he disappointed because local residents didn’t support many of the events, some of the festival committee members didn’t even show up.
