AUBURN —Police arrested a Lewiston man late Monday and charged him with two drug violations following a traffic stop.

According to a press release from the Auburn Police Department, at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday Auburn officer Matthew Johnson made a traffic stop in Lewiston for a motor vehicle violation. When he stopped the car, the adult male passenger “bolted from the car and led Officer Johnson on a foot pursuit toward the Lincoln Street canal.”

Johnson saw the man throw a bag in the canal and detained him.

That man, Terrance Haskins, 30, of Lewiston was charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, refusal to submit to arrest or detention and violating conditions of release. Haskins is currently being held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail.

With the assistance of Lewiston police and fire departments, Auburn officers were able to recover the bag from the water.

According to Auburn police, the bag contained three ounces of crack cocaine and 16 grams of heroin. The total street value of the drugs seized is approximately $7,300.

In 2012, Haskins was convicted of possession of up to 1 1/4-ounces of marijuana and fined $350 in 8th District Court. That year he was also found guilty of operating a vehicle without a license and violating condition of release and sentenced to serve 24 hours in jail.

He is currently under indictment in Androscoggin County Superior Court for charges of trafficking in prison contraband and violating condition of release.
