AUGUSTA (AP) — Thousands of Augusta residents may have been confused when they got tax bills recently that appeared to be from another city.
The mistake involved about 2,500 residents who received bills with the city of South Portland on the letterhead. The communities are about 60 miles apart.
City Clerk Barbara Wardwell says the amount of the bills was correct, it was just the letterhead that was wrong.
Wardwell told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1tUtr3O ) the company with which the city contracts to print and mail its tax bills provides that same service to several other municipalities, including South Portland, and they simply sent the bills out on the wrong stationery.
The company has since rectified the situation, sending out new bills on the correct stationery, at no charge to the city.
