LEWISTON — Starting in October, The Public Theatre will launch its new Play Pal program for people who love to go to the theater, but find themselves having no one to go with. This program will connect solo theater-goers with other solo theater-lovers when they attend a 3 p.m. Saturday performance.
All Play Pal members attending the Saturday matinee performance will be seated together and identified to each other making it easy to make a new friend at The Public Theatre. Play Pals are given a coupon for a free concession item, encouraging them to meet and mingle with others during intermission.
A “getting to know you” game card is also available for adventuresome Play Pal members, offering a chance to win fun prizes. Membership in this program is free with the only requirement being that you are a solo theater-goer. Members can choose to see one play or every play in the season, and the shows you attend are up to you. Tickets to any production are $20 each and $5 for anyone 18 years of age and younger.
“We wanted to create a program that would help to connect theatre-lovers as well as encourage people to come to the theatre without a partner,” said co-Artistic Director Janet Mitchko. “We found that many people who love theatre, are not comfortable going by themselves, and we created this program for them.”
The Public Theatre’s Play Pal program will be available for these Saturday 3 p.m. shows: October 25 for A.R. Gurney’s comedy “The Cocktail Hour,” January 31 for Tony Award-winning comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” March 21 for John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar,” and May 9 for Neil Simon’s classic comedy “The Sunshine Boys.”
The Play Pal program will also be offered for the 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 performance of Susan Poulin’s “I Married an Alien!,” and the 7 p.m. Friday, Dec 12 performance of “A Christmas Carol.”
