DIXFIELD — Superintendent Craig King believes setting long-term goals will benefit Regional School Unit 10 financially and academically.

He proposed to school directors at Monday’s meeting that they hold an hourlong workshop each month for the next few months to brainstorm ideas for improving the district.

“The board needs broadly defined goals to make decisions about governing the district,” he said.

The goal-setting will use information such as the data collected by an ad hoc Buildings and Grounds Committee and an architect on the conditions and spaces available at each building.

The committee recently completed its study. The architect is expected to present a report to the board in the fall. Public information sessions will be held on the recommendations.

“By the end of the school year, we’ll have well-defined goals,” King said.

The goals are expected to improve the district’s overall financial condition, as well as the school environment and academics.

A high school for the 12-town district is likely not one of the plans, King said, because the state has 17 requests for new high schools.

RSU 10 high schools in Dixfield, Rumford and Buckfield serve about 750 students.

The goals are expected to cover the next five or six years, King said.
