Today’s tip: No empty desks! Make sure your child doesn’t miss school, or is late.
“The most important way to help your child succeed in school is to make sure he or she is on time and attends every day,” said Becky Skilling, who teaches first grade at Park Avenue Elementary School in Auburn.
“On the first day of school, students are excited with their new clothes, their new pencils and backpacks,” she said. “You have to keep that excitement going and be there every day.” There is no substitute for being there, she said. “You can’t recreate that learning that the child is missing.”
Being on time for school is important, she said. When students are late, they miss the organizational time of their day.
When parents insist their children go to school every day and be on time, “they’re sending their child the message that education is important,” Skilling said.
