LIVERMORE FALLS — The late S. Paul Washburn, who died at the age of 92 on Nov. 21, 2013, had a wish to have a health center built in a prominent location in town, according to a Franklin Memorial Hospital news release.

His “generous” bequest to the hospital helped make his “enduring wish” come to fruition when FMH’s new $4 million, 13,500-square-foot Androscoggin Valley Medical Arts Center opened its doors on Main Street in January 2012.

The hospital will honor him posthumously with a private dedication ceremony Wednesday.

This past year, the hospital received more than $617,000 from the estate of S. Paul Washburn, the release said.

Washburn, who was born in Garland, lived in Livermore Falls most of his adult life. He and his late wife, Ellen, who died at age 82 in 2000, lived in a home on Munsey Avenue.

The couple “enjoyed many years of shared interests in the community and fraternal organizations, including the Odd Fellows,” the release said.

The Washburns were dedicated community members and longtime members of the First Baptist Church in Livermore Falls.

Paul Washburn was employed at International Paper Co. in Jay as a bookkeeper in the business office for many years. He was also an active, long-standing member of the Franklin Memorial Hospital board of directors.

His wife was one of the first employees during the construction of IP’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay, now owned by Verso Paper Corp., and worked in the engineering department. She later was a bookkeeper for New England Furniture Co. and Dunton Department Stores in Livermore Falls, according to her obituary.
