LISBON FALLS — On Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, Merton Ricker of the Lisbon Historical Society will present “Music, Music, Music,” a talk about musicians and musical groups from the local area.

Ricker’s research has found that several young drummers and fife players from here were recruited for service as musicians in the Civil War. There was also the noted Mishawaum Band in the late 1800s that competed against groups in neighboring communities, traveling there by horse and wagon.

Then Ricker’s talk will highlight the 1940s and 50s, when many young people played in school bands and orchestras, some of those musicians still performing in groups even now. Dances of the day featured big band and country-western groups, with local residents travelling, often by trolley, to dances in halls and pavilions now long gone.

The program for the evening will begin with a brief performance by “Dr. Dick’s Puppet Sticks.” Dr. Dick Krejsa of San Luis Obispo, Calif., has performed in many venues all over the country, and will give a short demonstration of his puppeting skills.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the program. The Lisbon Historical Society is in the MTM Center, 18 School St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event starts following a brief business meeting at 7 p.m. Parking and entrance are at the rear of the MTM building.
