1962 – 2014
AUBURN — Melissa A. Atkinson, 52, of North Turner, passed away on Thursday, June 5, after a long battle with cancer.
Melissa was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on April 28, 1962, which is the same birthday she shared with her older sister, Suzan. Melissa was predeceased by her parents, Robert F. and Phyllis A. (Caron) Atkinson; her paternal grandparents, Philip W. and Rose (Renaud) Atkinson; and maternal grandparents, Joseph H. and Bertha (Guertin) Caron, all of Fitchburg, Mass.
Missy began her schooling in Fitchburg, Mass., at St. Francis Grammar School, then went on to Westminster Elementary School. She continued with schools in Washington state, then moving back to New England, she finished high school at Leavitt High School in Turner.
Melissa had many joys in her life. One of her happiest was going to Cape Cod every summer with family and enjoying the sun, beach and great summer shopping that “The Cape” had to offer. Missy also loved all the great seafood at the Cape. She got a kick out of minigolf with her beloved nephew, Shawn. She also enjoyed the times she went to some famous plays out at the Cape Cod Playhouse.
Missy loved to go to Bear Pond and Brettuns Pond in Maine with her beloved nephew, Shawn, where they would swim and have a great time. She also enjoyed the many times she attended rock concerts in Boston and Worcester, Mass., with her sister, Suzan, throughout the years; especially when she finally got to see Rod Stewart for the first time.
Missy also enjoyed all the food and craft fairs and historical places she attended with her family in Massachusetts and Maine throughout the years; wonderful, happy moments spent together with her beloved mother and sister, Suzan, eating wonderful foods and all day browsing and shopping to our hearts’ content. Missy enjoyed those long rides all over New England, just talking and laughing with family and having a great time, even before we arrived at our destination. She loved attending all of her nephew Shawn’s basketball, baseball and football games all through grammar and high school, and even when he played football for Maine Maritime Academy.
Missy was always up on fashion and made sure she always had the newest thing. Whether it be a new purse or hat or piece of jewelry. She loved to just be in clothing stores and finding new, cute outfits. Missy learned to do needlepoint when she was a teenager and was very good at it. She made many beautiful pieces and gave them as gifts throughout the years.
She was also very good at baking wonderful desserts for her family and especially her nephew, Shawn. She also cooked some of her mother’s favorite holiday foods and they came out wonderfully. Missy was a big cat lover! She loved all the cats that had been in her family’s home; beginning with fantastic Mini, then her beloved Kitty and finally, her Tootsie, who will miss Missy very much! Missy also loved all her beloved dogs throughout her life with her parents in their home, beginning with Wolf, Wolf II, Heidi, Polly and Amy; then came along Zack, Dusty and Hannah, and then there was Bear, Willy and Hannah II. She loved them all and took care of them daily.
Missy especially loved her home in Westminster, Mass.; it was the place she spoke so fondly of for years and missed. Missy was a kind person to all. She never asked for much and yet gave of her heart so easily.
Melissa “Missy” is survived by her older sister, Suzan Atkinson-Haverty and her husband, Scot D. Haverty, of North Orange, Mass.; her beloved nephew, Shawn E. Atkinson of North Turner; her brother, Scott R. Atkinson of Washington state; and Jane Atkinson of North Turner.
