DURHAM — A missing SUV involved in a 100 mph chase with police in Durham last week was recovered three days later behind a house in that town.
The purple Chevrolet Tracker was found by Maine State Police on Leighton Road on Friday by Trooper Jodell Wilkinson, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The driver, Wayne King, 35, of Waldoboro, was charged with aggravated operation of a motor vehicle after suspension and eluding a police officer.
King was arrested a week ago on warrants for not paying fines and for a probation violation unrelated to the chase after he was discovered hiding in a storage area in an apartment house in Lewiston, officials said.
On Sept. 2, state police were involved in chasing the 1999 SUV they believed was being driven by Edwin Duquette, based on the vehicle registration information. A trooper attempted to pull over the vehicle on Route 136 in Durham, according to state police. The vehicle nearly struck a pair of flaggers at a construction site and was last seen heading into Pownal.
When Duquette saw his photo on Facebook and in news reports, he called police to report that he recently sold the SUV to someone who took the license plates at the time of sale.
Police said they believed King was driving the SUV.
