LEWISTON — Legendary concert pianist Frank Glazer will inaugurate the Piano Series season at the Franco Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. The concert will feature works by Franck, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel and Liszt.
Called by some “an American treasure,” Glazer left his native Wisconsin when he was 17, to study in Berlin with Artur Schnabel, the renowned Beethoven and Schubert interpreter. His career has taken him to the major performance halls in the United States, Europe, the Near East, and South America, including solo recitals, appearances with orchestras, and collaborations with major chamber music ensembles.
He made his critically-acclaimed solo debut at New York’s Town Hall in 1936, when he was 21, thereby launching a career as concert artist and respected teacher, a professional journey interrupted only by World War II and a period of self-study during which he discovered the most efficient way to play, a revelation he credits with allowing him to continue performing into his 100th year.
Glazer’s will begin with a prelude by Cesar Franck, followed by Schumann’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 22. After intermission, he will continue with Debussy’s “La fille aux cheveux de lin” (“The Girl with Flaxen Hair”) and Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau” (“Fountains”), followed by Franz Liszt’s arrangements of pieces by Schubert and Chopin. He will close his program with Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12.
